Project: ARCTIC VOID

Type : TITLE DESIGN

Synopsis

When the filmmakers of the thriller, “Arctic Void,” reached out to Refuge, they asked for help with the kind of visual effects work that gets us excited: a couple of creatures and enhancements of gore. But as we dove further into the project, we discovered that the film had not yet developed a concept for its main titles, opening up an opportunity for us to pitch several ideas.

Inspiration : Arctic Loss

The melting of the polar ice caps is a sign of a decaying world that is threatened by loss. The film “Arctic Void” has an eerie feeling of dread underneath the surface. In the cracks and crevices where the advances in technology threaten the natural world.

Pitch 1 : Melting Islands

Themes of human-caused climate change are central to “Arctic Void,” so we explored an early concept of melting icebergs across a sea of black.

Pitch 2 : Winter Montage

Our second concept shifted the focus to include the wildlife of the Arctic, whose wildly abnormal behavior play a prominent role in the narrative. We also felt a monochromatic motif would help to convey the sense of isolation experienced by the main characters.

Pitch 3 : Melting Polar Bear

Our final pitch, the melting of a polar bear sculpted as ice, resonated the most with all involved. The viewer is greeted with an abstraction of melting ice, revealed to be the ice bear, which give way to the final images of skeletal death.
