Project: THE PERIPHERAL

Type : HUD DESIGN

Synopsis

After designing concepts for the bionic hand and the Koid servant, visual effects supervisors Jay Worth and Mark Spatny asked us to also develop the user interface and user experience for a futuristic, holographic map that could be used to track down fugitives of this world.

Collecting Data : Inspiration

How do you conceptualize holographic displays of the future? How could technology present complex information in more compelling and intuitive ways than we experience today?

Approach : Layer Cake

Our inspiration came from looking to the past in the form of transparent acetate overlays from scientific diagrams. Often found in textbooks, these diagrams typically consist of multiple transparent sheets, each depicting a different layer or component of a biological system. When stacked, they create a comprehensive view of complex structures, such as human anatomy, ecosystems, or cellular components.

Design should always be motivated by purpose and for these scenes we witness how Cherise Nuland, the head of Research Institute, can navigate many layers of map data in pursuit of her prey. In our imagined future London, the advanced surveillance state would have access to an almost excessive amount of information, which could be dynamically re-arranged and peeled away to display only what was needed.

Information in Motion

Example of how the map can collapse down to a portable glass surface.

Collapsed Map

Already today, we are close to being able to render photorealistic, computer generated depictions of ourselves. It only made sense that in the future this might be possible using surveillance imagery as the source of the data.
